According to a report by the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, Amir Shahbazi, a prisoner in Urmia Central Prison sentenced to amputation of his fingers, has dedicated suicide.
Shahbazi was reportedly transferred to solitary confinement after a cell phone was present in his possession. He took his personal life by ingesting capsules and subsequently died as a result of a delay in being transported to a hospital by jail authorities.
The incident has sparked additional outcry in opposition to harsh punitive measures within the jail system, with activists and human rights teams intensifying their calls in opposition to such practices underneath the hashtag #NoToRetribution.
