The National Museum of Iran Tehran

National Museum of Iran
The National Museum of Iran in Tehran opened in 1937. It was Iran’s first museum and is home to the country’s primary collection of archaeological and cultural treasures.
The museum boasts over 300,000 exhibits and comprises two institutions in separate buildings: the Museum of Ancient Iran and the Museum of the Islamic Era.
The Museum of Ancient Iran was designed by French archaeologist and architect Andre Godard and houses artifacts from prehistoric Iran to the end of the Sassanid period. The main building features a wealth of Achaemenid period decorations from Persepolis and a copy of the stela carved with Hammurabi’s Laws. It also includes The Salt Man, the preserved remains of a salt miner who died in the 3rd or 4th century CE.

Museum of the Islamic Era
An extension built in 1997 houses treasures from the early years of the Islamic era to the present, including handwritten copies of the Holy Quran and other religious texts. The upper floors chart the flourishing of Iranian art in various fields.
The National Museum of Iran also hosts temporary exhibitions.
