An estimate from 1982 suggests that the death toll in Lebanon during that time could have been around 17,825, although it was likely an undercount. It was reported that accurately numbering the dead in Lebanon was virtually impossible.
In the 1967 Middle East war, nearly 19,000 Egyptians, Syrians, and others were estimated to have been killed in the fighting with Israel, while a similar number perished in the 1973 war, with most of the dead believed to be combatants.
Conversely, the Gaza Health Ministry reported that about 70% of the 19,667 killed in Gaza were women and children, without providing a breakdown of how many were combatants.
Israel claims to have killed around 7,000 Hamas fighters but has not provided details on how that number was determined.
The death toll in Gaza is expected to rise significantly as Palestinians are able to dig out of the vast destruction caused by the war, as thousands are believed to still be buried in the rubble.
Omar Shakir, the Israel and Palestine director for Human Rights Watch, stated that many people who are missing under the rubble will likely be determined to have been killed, leading to an increase in the death toll even if the bombing were to stop today.
