May 22: Signed the next with PEN International after studying that writer and poet Mahvash Sabet was brutally tortured throughout interrogation in Evin Prison in August 2022, leading to fractures in each kneecaps. The PEN Center is livid. PEN International and the undersigned PEN Center are deeply involved concerning the well being and well-being of Mr. Mahvash Sabet and strongly condemn the persistent and deliberate medical negligence of Iranian writers and different prisoners of conscience.

Mahvash Sabet was arrested in July 2022 and sentenced to 10 years in jail in November 2022 after a grossly unfair trial. She faces trumped-up expenses and has been denied entry to her lawyer.
Sabe started writing poetry whereas in jail, and a set of his jail poems was translated into English and printed in 2013. She is an honorary member of the Austrian PEN and the Danish PEN, and she or he was the recipient of the 2017 PEN Pinter Award for International Courage Writers of the British PEN. . PEN International campaigned for her launch and featured her case in PEN’s 2014 Incarcerated Writers’ Day marketing campaign.
