Live Updates: Biden Administration Approves Sale of Tank Shells to Israel Without Congressional Approval

Israel has defended its mass detention of Palestinian men in Gaza, stating that it was necessary in order to determine if any of them were associated with Hamas. The detentions have stirred outrage following the release of photos and videos depicting the detainees tied up outdoors and stripped down to their underwear, which have widely circulated on social media.

Israeli government spokesman, Eylon Levy, defended the detention of men in Jabaliya and Shajaiye, areas in northern Gaza known for ongoing airstrikes and fighting, asserting that the individuals in those areas would be questioned to determine their associations. Israel has characterized these areas as Hamas strongholds. Critics have questioned the legality and morality of the mass detentions, arguing that they could violate the laws of war and disproportionately impact individuals who could not evacuate the area due to health concerns, disability or financial constraints. There have been reports of detainees who were not of military age, adding to the controversy surrounding the situation.

Analysts and human rights advocates have raised concerns about the treatment of the detainees, emphasizing the need for humane treatment and adherence to international law.

Israeli authorities have detained more than 200 suspects, including Hamas members, over the past 48 hours, according to Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the chief spokesman for the Israeli military. The treatment of the detainees and the methods used by Israeli forces have raised questions over their compliance with international humanitarian law.

In October, Israel warned civilians to evacuate the region, threatening to consider those who stayed as collaborators with terrorist organizations. International and local organizations have expressed concern for the treatment and well-being of the detained individuals.

Hani Almadhoun, a Washington-based fund-raiser, recounted the detention of his relatives, including a 13-year-old and a 72-year-old, who were not of military age. Allegations of revenge and humiliation have been made against the Israeli forces detaining individuals in Gaza. Many of the detained individuals have not been heard from since their detention, raising concerns about their treatment and well-being.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has expressed its concern for the recent reports and images of the detentions, emphasizing the need to treat all detainees with humanity and dignity, in accordance with international humanitarian law.

Concerns have been raised about the treatment of noncombatants and civilians, underscoring the need for respect for human rights and adherence to international law.
