Mashallah Karami, the father of Mohammad Mehdi Karami, remains detained in Qezel Hesar Prison as the first anniversary of his son’s execution approaches. He faces the imminent threat of being charged with crimes such as ‘acting against national security, fraud, and exploiting public sentiments’.
Mashallah Karami was arrested on August 31st during a security forces raid on his home and endured over two months of solitary confinement in precarious conditions. The initial court session to address his charges was scheduled for December 14th but was subsequently canceled for unspecified reasons.
According to a report by the Detainees’ Status Monitoring Committee, Mashallah Karami is under intense pressure to accept the accusations of ‘exploiting public sentiments and fraud.’ There is also a concern that coerced confession videos may be broadcast in the future. The report highlights that these manipulative tactics, which have been employed in the past, aim to tarnish the reputation of activists and their families, eroding public trust in these individuals.
As per the Detainees’ Status Monitoring Committee’s report, at least 11 individuals connected to Mashallah Karami’s case have been arrested. Fortunately, all of them have been released on bail. Mashallah Karami is currently detained in Block 15 of Qezel Hesar Prison.
The continued imprisonment of Mashallah Karami, despite his son’s execution and the lack of evidence supporting the charges against him, raises concerns about the fairness and justice within the judicial system.
