Canada sanctions Iranian Revolutionary Court choose for human rights violations

June 19, 2023 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly introduced immediately that Canada is imposing further sanctions beneath the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations. This is the twelfth sanctions Canada has imposed towards the Iranian regime since October 2022 and follows Canada’s efforts to align with designations introduced by the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Today’s sanctions record seven people for his or her involvement in gross and systematic human rights violations in Iran’s prison justice system, significantly in Iran’s Revolutionary Courts. As an company with shut ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Ministry of Intelligence, revolutionary courts are infamous for handing down demise sentences and harsh jail sentences primarily based on proof gathered beneath torture after sham trials.

The record of sanctioned individuals contains:

Morteza Barati, Judge of Isfahan Revolutionary Court Hadi Mansouri, Judge of Mashhad Revolutionary Court Musa Asif Al Hosseini, Judge of Karaj Revolutionary Court Sayed Mahmoud Sadati, Judge of Shiraz Revolutionary Court Mehrdad Tahamtan, Counselor Judge of Shiraz Criminal Court Mohammad Moghiseh , Judge, Supreme Court – Tehran Revolutionary Court Heydar Asiyabi, Judge, Gorgan Revolutionary Court

Today’s motion will prohibit transactions with people on these lists and successfully freeze any property held in Canada. Individuals positioned on the record in response to severe and systematic human rights violations may even not be admitted to Canada beneath the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Canada unequivocally opposes the usage of the demise penalty all over the place and in all instances. This is a punishment that’s incompatible with human rights and human dignity. We proceed to induce the Iranian regime to handle the professional grievances of its individuals, together with respecting their human rights and freedoms and their means to dwell and thrive in a society free from state concern, repression, intimidation and violence. Masu.
