The Transformation of a Historical Term into a Modern Weapon: Identifying the ‘Colonizer’

Colonialism has played a significant role in humanity’s evolution, particularly in the 19th century when European powers saw it as a symbol of pride and superiority. However, this mindset is now considered unacceptable. Instead, the concept of “indigeneity” has emerged as a way to confer moral authority on those considered to be on the right side of history.

Colonialism went beyond being just a policy; it also shaped the mindset of the people involved. It was not just about the East India Company’s control over the Indian subcontinent or the actions of European settlers in America, but also the imposition of culture, language, and social norms that have had lasting effects.

Decolonization was a step towards change, but “decolonizing the mind” was a different challenge, as described by Kenyan novelist Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. For him, colonialism not only had a physical impact but also sought to make its victims feel ashamed of their own identity and heritage.

The legacy of colonialism continues to shape modern society, with former colonial powers still holding significant influence in global decision making. This presents a thought-provoking paradox. Additionally, the West has seen a shift in societal attitudes, with movements for racial and social justice embracing causes such as the Palestinian struggle against settler colonialism.
