Despite facing a challenging year on the battlefield, Zelensky remains determined that Ukraine will emerge victorious

President Volodymyr Zelensky was determined to show that his country is not losing the war against Russia. He highlighted successes in air defense and naval efforts, and expressed readiness to negotiate with Russia, but only on Ukraine’s terms. Talks with the European Union about future Ukrainian membership also provided a glimmer of hope for Ukraine after recent diplomatic and military setbacks.

However, Ukraine is experiencing difficulties in maintaining the war against Russia, in obtaining military and financial aid, and in sustaining unity and political stability. The United States and the European Union delayed decisions on military and financial aid to Ukraine based on unrelated issues, and Hungary blocked a financial assistance package for Ukraine. While President Zelensky expressed confidence that both Europe and United States will deliver, he also warned of the potential negative impact of a future American president on Ukraine’s war policies.

Internally, Ukraine is facing challenges in terms of military mobilization, a high profile quarrel between President Zelensky and top military commander, General Valery Zaluzhny, and a decline in the President’s approval ratings. Despite this, Ukraine has been rallying international support and is prepared to negotiate a peace plan that conveys the county’s terms to Russia.

The country has seen both territorial and military successes but still faces the looming threat of Russia as they persist in their desire for combat. Ukraine has held its own and remains focused on survival.
