Several US-funded projects in Gaza are damaged or destroyed, but the majority remain unharmed

US-funded infrastructure projects in Gaza, which had been recently renovated, have fallen victim to Israeli military strikes in response to an attack from Hamas. The infrastructure damage includes the Gaza Sports Club as well as other facilities aimed at serving the community. Many Palestinians have been affected by the violence, with 20,000 killed and 1.9 million displaced from their homes. The United Nations has reported over 37,000 damaged or destroyed structures in the war so far.

Despite US funding of $7 billion in development and aid to the West Bank and Gaza, its efforts continue to be thwarted by resulting damage from Israeli military operations. More than 30 construction projects built or improved by US taxpayers have been identified in Gaza, but at least five of these projects have sustained damage.

Also, much-awaited infrastructure such as clean drinking water facilities has been damaged. An especially significant loss is the desalination plant in Deir Al Balah in Gaza, which the US spent $16 million to expand.

Anonymously-speaking US officials have mentioned ongoing diplomatic discussions to protect civilians. Furthermore, these officials confirm that the US government works closely with Israeli authorities by providing infrastructure coordinates, but casualties and damages continue. Furthermore, for years, military conditions have limited or halted the implementation of various projects in affected areas.

Past USAID mission directors mentioned their efforts to communicate with the Israeli side to protect US-backed projects, but noted destruction on development work.
