The UN Special Rapporteur on Iran has stated that the UN fact-finding mission is not limited to Iran’s human rights violations during the crackdown on the 2022 protests.
During an interview with Iran International, Javaid Rehman disclosed that the UN’s ongoing mission includes investigating the 1980s mass execution of political prisoners, as well as the rights of minorities.
He emphasized that the investigation extends beyond the regime’s atrocities following the death of Mahsa Amini last year, which led to months of unrest.
The Human Rights Council established a fact-finding mission to look into alleged human rights violations in Iran after the mass protests that started in September 2022.
Rehman, on his first visit to Australia as UN Special Rapporteur, highlighted the concerns expressed by Iranian civil societies and dissidents regarding the behavior of the Iranian regime. He noted that dissidents fear the regime may spy on them and seek revenge against their families, especially after participating in solidarity protests in Australia.
Similar concerns have been raised in other countries. Global News recently reported that Iranian dissidents in Canada fear potential harm from agents of the Islamic Republic.
However, Kazem Gharibabadi, the deputy head of the judiciary’s Human Rights Council, declared last week that the regime does not recognize the UN’s committee investigating alleged human rights violations in Iran.
