Iran Plans to Set Up Robotic Telesurgery Center in Indonesia

An agreement was signed by the Iranian Vice-President for Science, Technology and Knowledge-Based Economy, Ruhollah Dehqani-Firouzabadi, and the Indonesian Health Minister, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, to establish a robotic remote surgery center in a hospital in the city of Makkasar, Indonesia. The agreement includes the development of a robotic remote surgery training service center at Wahidin Sudiro Husodo General Hospital and the strengthening of surgeons’ and resident doctors’ capacity through advanced surgical skills training based on the latest scientific methods.

The agreement also involves the creation of an interdisciplinary platform between clinical doctors, researchers, and engineers to promote new ideas in medical education and encourage new research projects in the field of medical and surgical interventions. Iran and Indonesia had previously signed an agreement in May to expand cooperation in different fields of technology during a visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Jakarta. As part of this, a delegation of representatives from 13 companies traveled to Indonesia to introduce the capabilities of the country in the health and medical sector.

Furthermore, the two countries concluded negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement, aiming to increase trade between Indonesia and Iran. Iran also promised to help Indonesia modernize its healthcare with surgical robots during a meeting between the leaders of the two countries in Bogor, Jakarta Globe reported.

The signing of a memorandum of understanding on regulations related to pharmaceutical products, cosmetics, and traditional medicine, as well as a preferential trade agreement to expand market access for Indonesian exports of pharmaceutical products and processed food, took place during Raisi’s visit. Additionally, Iran has expertise in the health sector and many countries in the region are seeking Iranian help with health-related issues.
