On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, eight prisoners in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj were transferred to solitary cells to prepare for the implementation of their death sentences. These eight prisoners had previously been sentenced to death for charges related to drug offenses and murder.
Two of them are Afghan nationals who have been sentenced to death on murder charges, while another two have been sentenced to death for drug-related offenses. Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM) is making efforts to obtain further details regarding the identities of the rest of these prisoners.
The execution of prisoners on drug-related charges has seen a significant increase over the past three years. This year, in comparison to the first six months of 2022 when 91 individuals were executed on drug-related charges, there has been a 126% increase.
