World leaders, regardless of President Biden’s warning that the US is not going to endorse Taiwan’s independence, congratulated Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for securing a historic third presidential time period. DPP candidate William Lai emerged victorious over rival Koumintang (KMT) social gathering candidate Hou Yu-ih in final Saturday’s election. Beijing kept away from overtly siding with a candidate, however Chinese officers referred to Lai as “harmful.”
In response, Biden acknowledged, “We don’t help independence,” when questioned about Lai’s victory. US Secretary of State Tony Blinken echoed this sentiment, congratulating Lai on social media and praising the Taiwanese folks for his or her sturdy democratic system.
