Destruction of the Environment: The Government’s Spending on the Construction of the Finsk Dam

The Finsk dam in northern Iran has sparked controversy between the governors of Semnan and Mazandaran. Environmental activists have raised issues concerning the potential environmental penalties of this water construction, describing it as “harmful”.

Water and environmental activists consider that the operation of this dam could have adverse impacts, together with the destruction of industries within the northern provinces, drying up of wetlands and water areas, and a rise in soil erosion and climatic migrations. Despite these warnings, some influential figures within the parliament and authorities are pushing for the exploitation of this dam.

Located 70 kilometers northeast of Semnan, in Mehdishahr metropolis, the Finsk dam was constructed from the top branches of Tajen with the preliminary function of supplying ingesting water to the cities of Semnan, Mehdishahr, and Sarkheh.

Construction of the Finsk dam was accomplished in 2013, and it had acquired an working license from the Environmental Protection Agency. However, issues arose when 15,000 hectares of the Miankala water space dried up in December 1401, resulting in the cancellation of the dam’s operation.

The dispute between the governors of Semnan and Mazandaran continues, with conflicting statements concerning the destiny of the Finsk dam. Environmental activists warn concerning the risks of the dam, citing potential flooding of forests and agricultural lands, in addition to ecological disruptions.
