Iranian pop star sentenced to three years in jail for singing protest anthem


An Iranian pop singer whose music turned the nationwide anthem throughout mass protests greater than a yr in the past has been sentenced to a minimum of three years in jail, he introduced Friday.

He was sentenced to eight months in jail for “propaganda in opposition to the regime.”

It was not instantly clear when the decision was handed down, nor was it reported elsewhere.

Under Iranian regulation, Hajipour will serve a three-year sentence, which carries concurrent jail sentences.

“Baraye” was carried out at a White House gala in March 2023 commemorating Nowruz, the Persian New Year.

A month earlier, U.S. First Lady Jill Biden awarded Hajipour a particular Grammy Award for Best Song for Social Change, calling the music a “highly effective and poetic name for freedom and ladies’s rights.” Awarded.
